Good Fun Toy Sep 12, 2009
By Conrad C. Cline

My wife made me buy this and I am glad she did. I have been a big star trek fan for years, since I was a kid, and my wife has just gotten into it with me and is becoming a big fan herself. I am a person who is very finicky with what I buy when it comes to reproductions like this, even in key chain format. I expected this thing to be "worth what you pay for it", but was pleasantly surprised. This item definitely wins points for being well done, but is not a true replica. The three lights, green red and yellow, flash when used. The buttons give off recordings from kirk, spock, mccoy and weapons. The one thing I like though is the chirp it gives when opened. The sound quality is good for a toy like this, and doesn't sound high pitches or off to me. Definitely sounds "speakerish" but thats to be expected, and gives it more of a communicator feel to it. You can flip it open with a flick of the wrist or use to catches on the hinges (as they were designed to do) and flip it open to hear that familiar chirp.
I always disliked toys and replicas that gave false sounds. Like the voyager communicator I had that gave a completely inaccurate chirp. This replica, however, definitely does replicas justice when flipped open. The two inside buttons give the recordings, and I do wish that the recordings could be programmed, or maybe done on your own like a digital voice recorder, instead of the preset playing order that the circuitry allows for.
Overall this is a fun toy. Albeit a bit big for the pocket, but for any true trek fan this is a nice novelty item to have, especially if you want to always keep in touch with you ship. The quality of the key chain is more like the quality of some of the "replicas" that companies try to pump out. This key chain definitely beats many of the "life size true replicas" that are on the market; and definitely cheaper as well.

Not perfect, but fun! May 16, 2009
By CamelCamelCamel Pros: - Flippable screen (made of a soft plastic that feels durable) - Relatively inexpensive - Never be completely isolated on an alien planet again
Cons: - It's a little big (for my tastes) to be used as a functional keychain (thicker than the 2008 Hallmark communicator Christmas ornament) - The sound clips are too high-pitched, making the actors' voices nearly indistinguishable from one another
If you want a communicator and only want to buy one, I recommend the larger Diamond Select/Art Asylum model instead. This one's so bulky that it doesn't score points for being miniature -- it falls between the stools, so to speak. You may as well get the full-sized replica that'll score points for accuracy.
Excellent quality for such a low price. Oct 29, 2011

The sounds are just as clear as the full sized version. doesn't look like it will break any time soon.
Sometimes Size Doesn't Matter! Sep 21, 2011

This smaller-sized Star Trek Communicator is Just a Lot of Fun! It does get attention when you open it and it makes the classic Communicator sound! Especially at the 45th Anniversary Star Trek Convention!!) Don't know how long it would last in the hands of children, but I am an adult, so that doesn't matter to me! If you are considering it as a child's toy...just know that it is as likely to be destroyed as most things are in those destructive little hands! But...enjoy it while you can!

star trek communicator Aug 15, 2011
By Stanley P. Liebman This item is great for any star trek fan. It's an exact replica of the star trek communicator with lights and sound.I really like the added actual voices of the star trek crew talking on it.
